Testing Applicants Should Be Familiar with Required Documentation Before a Driver Test Can Begin

Before a driver license testing applicant will be permitted to begin the testing process there are particular documents and records the applicant will be required to have ready for inspection by the testing examiner. The checklists below can help you take exactly what you need with you to the driver testing site.

Financial Responsibility Acceptance Form (Now valid for all ages – The Arkansas State Police Signature Affidavit for Test Applicants 18 years of age or older is no longer needed. Please complete the form using the applicant’s full legal name as it appears on the Original Birth Certificate, U.S. Passport, Permanent Resident Card, Employment Authorization Card, Certificate of Citizenship or Certificate of Naturalization.)

Commercial Driver License (CDL) Testing Information

Act 922 relating to Commercial Driver License (CDL) went into effect on July 31, 2017. READ MORE HERE.

This act requires the completion of a Human Trafficking Prevention Course for the issuance or renewal of a Class “A” CDL.  This course will provide evidence of completion (a certificate) to the Department of Finance and Administration in order to be issued a new Class “A” or the renewal of a Class “A” license. **NOTE** — ONLY the certificates pictured will be accepted.

BEFORE CDL TESTING — You must purchase a CDL-1 Form (test packet) from the Department of Finance and Administration (Revenue Office). You will need a valid Arkansas Driver’s License and one (1) Proof of Legal Presence Document. Acceptable Proof of Legal Presence includes: U.S. Birth Certificate, U.S. Passport, Birth Abroad Certificate, Certificate of Citizenship, Certificate of Naturalization, Permanent Resident Card or Employment Authorization Card (excludes Canada and Mexico).

IF YOU’VE HAD A NAME CHANGE — You will need to provide a legal document that verifies your name as it appears on your Driver’s License. Acceptable documents include:

• Legal Name Change Document
• Marriage License
• Divorce Decree
• Adoption Decree

AT EACH VISIT TO THE TESTING CENTER — Applicants must present a:

• Valid Arkansas Driver’s License
• Current CDL-1 Form
• Proof of Legal Presence Document

FOR CDL SKILLS TESTING — You must have:

• Each item listed in the “Before CDL Testing” section (above).
• Must have an appointment for Skills Testing.
• Set of (2) two chocks for wheels.
• Legible DOT Inspection sticker for truck and trailer (less than one year from inspection date).
• All safety critical lights must function properly.
• Must pass air brake test as described in CDL Manual.
• Truck/trailer must be completely empty prior to arrival at the testing center.
• All items for vehicle inspection must be operable.
• CDL license for the person accompanying the applicant to test.

The written test for commercial driver licenses is administered at ALL of our troop testing sites. CDL Skill tests are ONLY administered at the following troop locations:

• Troop A – Little Rock
• Troop B – Newport
• Troop G – Hope
• Troop I – Harrison
• Troop J – Russellville
• Troop L – Lowell

In addition to a properly functioning commercial motor vehicle, drivers must bring:

• Proof of Legal Presence Document (marriage license if there has been a name change)
• Driver’s License
• Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)
• CDL-1 Forms (from Arkansas DFA Revenue Office)
• Chock(s) for wheels and empty trailer (or tank) of any cargo.

If any items on this list are missing at the appointment time, no test will be given (no exceptions).

Update to Basic Control Skills Testing:

CHANGES EFFECTIVE: October 1, 2025

The Forward Offset and Reverse Offset Backing, along with the CDL Skills Sheet, are changing as follows:

• The Forward Offset Tracking exercise will be one continuous motion without stopping. Scoring is the same — 2 points for hitting any of the cones (left or right side of the alley) and 5 points for missing the 3-foot line. If any part of the tread of the right rear tire gets between the cone and the 3-foot line, no points are recorded. The back of the CMV must go past the Forward Stop Box by 3 to 4 feet. (See Figure 1, which clearly illustrates the Reverse Offset Backing exercise).

• On the Reverse Offset Backing exercise, the driver must be parallel with the outer boundary before the test starts. If the driver is not parallel with the outer boundary, points for any pull ups will be given to the Reverse Offset Backing exercise.
