The Arkansas State Police is statutorily charged with duties to administer the rules and licensing of private investigators, private security agencies, alarm system companies, polygraph examiners and voice stress analysis examiners.

Act 393 of 2015 adopted by the Arkansas General Assembly repealed and replaced several provisions of A.C.A. §17-39-101 et seq. and §17-40-101 et seq.
Arkansas maintains reciprocal agreements relating to private investigator licenses issued by the states of Tennessee, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.

The State Exam for Managers, Training Administrators, Assistant Training Administrators, Training Instructors, and Private Investigators is administered on Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. at the Little Rock State Police Headquarters. This is a proctored examination. The study material for this examination is Act 393 of the Arkansas General Assembly and the Private Security & Alarm Service Rules, excluding Polygraph and Voice Stress material. Please note that applicants are required to provide proof of identification.
Effective August 5, 2025, all identification cards are being disseminated electronically via email. Please contact your credentialed manager for questions regarding identification cards.
The Federal Background Check Fee will be increasing from $10 to $13, effective October 1, 2026. PI Security and Alarm will have updated applications available on the webpage beginning Wednesday, September 30. The new applications will display ‘10-2026’ as the effective date.
*Effective October 1, 2026: All previous versions of PI-Security applications will be invalid.*
