Special Agents of the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred at approximately 7:15pm yesterday evening, (Saturday, December 16, 2017) off of US Highway 167 in Independence County.
Andrew D. Hatley, 28, of Batesville, has been identified as the individual who was injured after he reportedly pointed a weapon at local law enforcement officers.
Two officers with the Batesville Police Department were conducting a traffic stop on US Highway 167. Hatley, who was a passenger in the stopped vehicle began to resist the officers, and fled on foot. According to initial statements, Hatley ran a short distance then turned and pointed a handgun at the officers. Both officers fired their weapons, striking Hatley, who was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. Questions relating to the identity of law enforcement personnel or their administrative status should be directed to the Batesville Police Department.
Upon completion of the investigation, state police special agents will submit an investigative file to the Independence County prosecuting attorney for consideration to determine whether use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer was justified as defined by state laws.
